Alcohol Cravings Explained: What's Really Happening
A lot of people find sobriety content online and still walk away feeling like something is missing. Maybe you’ve tried willpower and felt exhausted. Maybe you’ve tried avoiding triggers completely but yet cravings still pop up every single night. Maybe you’ve had long stretches where you felt really strong in your sobriety but then something happens and all your progress disappears.
First of all, same.
Second of all, this is solvable, you just need to the right tools and understanding of what addiction really is.
Most people approach sobriety as a discipline problem and that is exactly why so many fall off.
But in reality, drinking habits are driven by subconscious patterns that your brain has learned over time to solve problems and meet deep emotional and survival needs.
And at some point, alcohol became the fastest way to provide us with relief, comfort, escape, connection, stress, turning off anxious thoughts, and your brain created a “shortcut”.
This shortcut is what drives addictive behaviors.
Until you code a new shortcut, the behaviors will feel impossible to resist.
This is why you may feel strong and committed to your recovery one day and completely overwhelmed by the urge to drink the next.
The real shift happens when you start to work with your subconscious mind and update the “mental model” your brain is using to perceive your sobriety journey by learning better, healthier solutions for the same emotional needs.
When you code those solutions as your new shortcut, the cravings lose their power.
